On 18 August, the city of Bolesławiec (Poland) held a ceremony to celebrate the official award of the Europe Prize 2023, in the presence of a large public and representatives of twinned cities, the business sector, schools, the church and various associations, the President and municipalities of the region and honorary citizens of Bolesławiec.
On this occasion, Carmen Leyte (Spain, EPP/CD), Chairperson of the Sub-Committee on the Europe Prize, addressed the participants and officially presented Piotr Roman, Mayor of Bolesławiec, with the Europe Prize trophy, a medal, a diploma and a scholarship of 20,000 euros for a study trip to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg for young people.
Bolesławiec is the sixth Polish city to obtain the Europe Prize after Lublin, Słupsk, Katowice, Gdynia and Częstochowa.
It was rewarded for its cooperation in the fields of sport, education and culture with foreign municipalities. It is very active in a large number of EU-funded projects with European partners and is involved in cross-border cooperation. Its commitment to young people is reflected in the organisation of regular educational activities on Europe and the European picnic each year in May.
It is also a city of solidarity, as evidenced by the signing of a declaration of solidarity with Ukraine in 2022 alongside delegations from all the twinned cities. The city is finally known for its Ceramics Festival, which attracts thousands of Europeans every year. It is a member of two Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe.
The city of Bolesławiec becomes the 83rd city to be awarded the Europe Prize since its creation in 1955.
