Strasbourg (Palais de l’Europe, Room 5) ,

A colloquy organised by the Council of Europe and the Cypriot Chairmanship of its Committee of Ministers will bring together representatives from international organisations and governments, as well as academic experts, to discuss ways to strengthen co-operation to protect cultural heritage from destruction and illicit trafficking, including by organised crime and terrorist groups.

Keynote speakers include Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland, Ioannis Kasoulides, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, and Mammoun Abdulkarim, Director-General of Antiquities and Museums in Syria.

The discussion will contribute to the preparatory work of a new Council of Europe convention on offences related to cultural property, which will become the only international treaty focusing on criminal measures and sanctions in this field.

The event will be webcast live on www.coe.int.
