Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić has met with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell Fontelles.
Marija Pejčinović Burić reiterated the Organisation’s support to Ukraine highlighting the relevance of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine for 2023-2026.
She also emphasised the conclusions of the Fourth Summit of Heads of State and Government setting up an ambitious path to strengthen democratic security, put an end to democratic backsliding and respond to new challenges, such as artificial intelligence or the impact of climate change and environmental damage on human rights.
In addition, the Summit marked the prominence of the strategic partnership between the Council of Europe and the European Union, including in relation to the EU’s accession to the European Convention on Human Rights and to supporting candidate countries in their EU accession processes.
The Register of Damage Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, as the first component of an international compensation mechanism, was another key agenda item.
