The Secretary General of the 47-nation Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, has warmly welcomed today’s decisions by the EU Council that the European Union as a whole should sign up to the Council of Europe’s Istanbul Convention on violence against women and domestic violence.
“Violence against women and domestic violence have a terrible impact on millions of people’s lives every single day.
“Today’s decisions send a powerful message across Europe and beyond that such violence is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
“I call on the EU and its member states to work towards full implementation of the convention as soon as possible,” he said.
