Visit of government officials from Curaçao

On 6 June, the Department for the Execution of Judgments met with a delegation from the Ministry of Justice of Curaçao, an autonomous country situated in the Caribbean and belonging to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, together with the Government Agent of the Netherlands and the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the Council of Europe. The delegation consisted of the Director of the Immigration and Naturalisation Service, the Head of the Legal Department, and a lawyer from the Ministry.

The Department introduced the supervision of the execution of the European Court’s judgments as well as its main working methods. The visit further allowed for an exchange regarding the case of Murray v. the Netherlands ahead of its first examination by the Committee of Ministers at its 1501st Human Rights meeting (11 to 13 June 2024). The case concerns the de facto irreducibility of the life sentence imposed on the applicant suffering from a mental illness who served the first 19 years of his sentence in a prison in Curaçao.
