COMEX 81st plenary meeting

The Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages held its 81st plenary meeting on 18-20 March 2025 in Strasbourg.

During the meeting, the committee adopted its 6th evaluation report on the application of the Charter by Slovenia, which will be transmitted to the authorities for possible comments within a deadline of two months after transmission. The evaluation report and the state comments will then be made public and submitted to the Committee of Ministers. The committee also adopted the mid-term report on the implementation of its recommendations for immediate action by Austria, which will be published in the coming days and submitted to the Committee of Ministers for information.

On 19 March, the Committee of Experts elected Albert Branchadell (Spain) as the First Vice-Chair of the Committee, with a mandate until 31 December 2025. 
On 20 March, the Committee of Experts held an exchange of views with Fernando Ramallo Fernández, Professor of Linguistics at University of Vigo, Massimiliano Spotti, Associate Professor in Ethnography and Digital Literacies at Tilburg University and Joan Pujolar Cos, Professor of Sociolinguistics at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya), on the concept of “users of regional or minority languages” and the role of new speakers in the protection of these languages. The committee also heard a presentation of the European Year of Digital Citizenship 2025.

The committee will hold its next plenary meeting in June 2025 in Strasbourg.
