Council of Europe Days:
telling the Council of Europe’s story

People across the Council of Europe’s 46 member states live in greater safety, security and dignity because their governments protect their human rights.  Most of them would struggle to list all of their rights as laid out in the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Social Charter.  They might also not know about the various conventions that we have in place covering everything from the prevention of torture, to tackling human trafficking, to combating violence against women and domestic violence.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe on 5 May 2024, and to raise awareness of the role and impact of the Organisation in San Marino, the two Captains Regent (dual head of state), Alessandro Rossi and Milena Gasperoni, have made a statement broadcasted on the national television.

The Captains Regent emphasised that since joining the Council of Europe in 1988, San Marino has actively and strongly supported its values and founding principles. "The membership has led to important reforms in San Marino for the common good of citizens in areas such as the economic and financial sector, the fight against corruption and the defence of the rights of everyone. San Marino cooperates with the Council of Europe to address the main challenges that our continent is facing: support in conflict areas, the development of artificial intelligence and protection of the environment".

In their address, the Captains Regent underlined that "While celebrating its 75th anniversary, the Council of Europe must continue its efforts to cope effectively with the current complex situation and demonstrate adaptability and determination to meet today's challenges. "San Marino as a strong supporter of dialogue and peace building through multilateralism, and is advocating that the values of justice, solidarity, mutual understanding, respect and acceptance of pluralities are promoted and transmitted also to young people." They further stressed that the implementation of the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights is a priority for San Marino.

 Telling the story

We flourish when we have the freedom to be who we are, when we are able to express ourselves freely whilst respecting the dignity of others, when we are able to make a contribution to the societies in which we live, and when we are respected for our differences.

The Council of Europe, Europe's Human Rights Guardian is an intergovernmental organisation with 46 member states. It promotes and develops our human rights at the pan-European level.

The member states of the Council of Europe have a role in raising awareness of the human rights standards and work of the Council of Europe among their populations. These standards and the work of the Council of Europe have a huge impact on the lives of people living in Europe.
