The Monitoring Committee met in Strasbourg on 29 October 2019 during the 37th Session. Members adopted the draft report on local and regional democracy in Hungary. Prepared by co-rapporteurs Marc Cools (Belgium, ILDG) and Jean-Pierre Liouville (France, SOC), this report will be submitted for adoption at the 38th session (17-19 March 2020).
In addition, the situation with regard to local democracy in Turkey was discussed, following the recent monitoring visit to Turkey from 1 to 3 October 2019 by co-rapporteurs Jakob Wienen (Netherlands, EPP/CCE) and Yoomi Renström (Sweden, SOC).
Members were also informed of the draft report on local and regional democracy in Armenia currently being prepared by co-rapporteurs Bryony Rudkin (United Kingdom, SOC) and Gunn Marit Helgesen (Norway, EPP/ECC).
The meeting agenda also included, for information, the programmes for the forthcoming monitoring visits: Turkey (second part of the monitoring visit, 12-13 November 2019), Republic of Moldova (monitoring visit, 20-21 November 2019) and Portugal (second part of the monitoring visit, 27 November 2019).
The committee discussed compliance with the European Charter of Local Self-Government following complaints from national associations of local authorities or local elected representatives from several countries such as Serbia, Albania, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Latvia.
