Tunisia: opening of the first Local Democracy Agency in the Mediterranean region

The first Local Democracy Agency (LDA) in the Mediterranean region was officially opened on 27 April 2017 in Kairouan, Tunisia. On this occasion, the representatives of the ALDA (the European Association for Local Democracy) and of the municipality of Kairouan gathered together with their civil society partners and Tunisian and European local authorities. This ceremony was an opportunity for the LDA’s European and Tunisian partners to confirm and sign the Memorandum of Understanding on the opening of the LDA in the presence of numerous local and international actors working for democracy in Tunisia. This LDA will help to promote good local governance, citizens' participation and sustainable development in Tunisia, in the context of the decentralisation reform being carried out within the country. The Kairouan LDA also aims to become a platform for the entire Maghreb region. Established at the instigation of the Congress in 1999, the ALDA is a partner in the Congress's programmes of activities. Through its LDA network, it disseminates, at the local and regional level, the Organisation’s instruments for promoting local democracy and encourages exchanges of good practices regarding the functioning of democratic institutions.
