Finland: Five sites join the Women Writers Route

The Women Writers Route, certified Cultural Route of the Council of Europe since 2022, has expanded to Finland. Five new Finnish members have joined the Route: the Museum of Finnish Book Pukstaavi, the Finnish Literature Society, the University of Turku, the University of Eastern Finland and the Minna Canth House Association.

The Women Writers Route explores the lives and works of women writers between the 19th and 20th centuries, aiming to enhance their visibility in European culture. This exciting expansion reflects the work of the Route in fostering national and international co-operation on women writers.

As part of this expansion, two Finnish women writers have been added to the Route: Minna Canth (1844-1897) and Adèle Weman (1844-1936). Minna Canth was a prominent writer and journalist, notable for her pioneering work in the Nordic realism genre. Her advocacy for women’s rights gave her a key role in the campaign for the right for women to vote in Finland. Adèle Weman was a writer and teacher who played a trailblazing role in promoting education, culture and youth work. Her former home Villa Sagalund, part of the Sagalund Museum in in Kemiö, now preserves her memory as a house museum.

Finland has been a member state of the EPA on Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe since 2018.
