Purpose:
The group of interfaith dialogue promotes spirituality through knowledge and understanding of different beliefs and religious or spiritual developments with a learning attitude. The project recognises and values religious diversity.
Stimulus/Rationale:
With the intention that spirituality, religion, beliefs and convictions contribute to improving coexistence, showing and emphasising the value of diversity, Interreligious Dialogue Tenerife was formed in 2017. Its motto, 'Loving unity in diversity', captures the purpose of this group of ‘Together In the same direction’: to promote spirituality through knowledge and understanding of different beliefs, religions or spiritual developments with an attitude of learning and harmonious coexistence.
Process:
The interfaith dialogue group was born in 2017 as a result of a longer process. In 2011, the El Fraile Citizen Participation Group (Tenerife, Spain) had a dream of becoming a positive reference neighbourhood for diversity management. The group wanted spirituality, religion, beliefs, and convictions, to contribute to the improvement of the coexistence and to show the value of diversity. With this objective, the 'Interreligious prayer for peace, respect and coexistence' was born in 2013. This project evolved and became the interfaith dialogue group, which consists of persons representing different religious and spiritual communities.
A wide variety of interreligious activities or projects are organised: an interreligious prayer for Peace, Respect and Coexistence, opening of temples, interreligious dialogue tables, a radio programme, a documentary colloquium, photographic exhibitions, a common and shared glossary of concepts and shared social and environmental actions.
Impact:
The Interreligious Dialogue Group evaluates each edition of the interreligious prayer in a participatory manner. The evaluation allows to introduce improvements and proposals every year.
