The Council of Europe will participate in RightsCon 2025, the 13th edition of the world’s leading summit on human rights in the digital age. RightsCon is a civil society-led space where all stakeholders – from civil society organisation to tech companies, from government representatives to human rights defenders –come together to build a rights-respecting digital future.
The Council of Europe will host and moderate the online roundtable “Scarier than eco-anxiety: how the law is abused to silence information on the environment”. It will address SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) to silence information of public interest on environmental matters.
On 5 April 2024, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted Recommendation CM/Rec(2024)2 on countering the use of strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs) to address the chilling effect these abusive legal actions have on freedom of expression and public participation. The roundtable provides the opportunity to focus the discussion on SLAPPs against information on environmental matters gathering insights for future initiatives to counter "green SLAPPs".
