Ambassador Corina Călugăru, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Moldova and Thematic Co-ordinator on Information Policy (TC-INF) invited Committee of Ministers delegations to an informal briefing on Council of Europe’s involvement in addressing emerging challenges and opportunities stemming from the latest developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence. This transversal issue is coordinated by Jan Kleijssen, Director of Information Society - Action against Crime Directorate, in the framework of the inter-organisational Task Force for Information Society and Internet Governance.
An overview on Artificial intelligence, opportunities and challenges for the Council of Europe was presented by Yannick Meneceur, Policy advisor on digital transformation and artificial intelligence. It was followed by a review of the on-going work in the areas of Anti-discrimination, Bioethics, Children’s Rights, Culture, Data Protection, Democracy, Education, Fight against Corruption, Fight against Cybercrime, Gender Equality, Information Society and Justice.
As a new priority line of work for the Organisation, Artificial Intelligence is progressively integrated into the agenda of most of the Council of Europe’s intergovernmental and expert committees, other bodies and structures. The private sector is also interested in cooperating in this important area, as reflected in the TC-INF meeting 23 May 2018 with participation of internet intermediaries.
