On 19 September 2017 the Council of Europe in partnership with the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) organised in Tunis a training session on media coverage of terrorism. Facilitated by the journalist and trainer, Nasreddine Louati, this booster training session for journalists was the follow-up to two awareness raising and training workshops which took place in May and November 2016 respectively.
This session was dedicated in particular to practical exercises on ethical and professional challenges, editorial choices, data verification, management, assessment and analysis of the coverage.
Following this session, an open meeting which brought together the journalists trained, editors in chief, Tunisian experts and academics, representatives of the SNJT and of the Council of Europe, took place on 20 September 2017.
Participants discussed about issues and difficulties faced by the journalists within their editorial team when reporting on terrorism.
They looked, in particular, at the role and responsibilities of editors in chief and innovative professional approaches enabling journalists to meet the professional prerequisites of media coverage of terrorism.
