Every two years, a high-level panel on the question of the death penalty is organized during a session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.
This panel was held on 25 February during the 58th session of the Human Rights Council. It addresses “the contribution of the judiciary to the advancement of human rights and the question of the death penalty”.
On this occasion, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Alain Berset delivered the following declaration, recalling inter alia that the Council of Europe remains mobilised in favor of the universal abolition of the death penalty.
In addition, the Council of Europe also co-sponsored a side-event on “The enduring nature of the death penalty under abolitionist de facto (ADF) status”. It was organized by The Death Penalty Project (DPP) and the University of Oxford, with whom the Council of Europe is currently working on a study on moratoria.
