Law Faculty Students Discussed Artificial Intelligence

On 31 May 2024, the European Union and Council of Europe Joint Programme on “Supporting the Effective Implementation of Turkish Constitutional Court Judgments in the Field of Fundamental Rights” organised a panel at the Law Faculty of the Ankara Medipol University.

Addressing the participants at the opening ceremony, the Dean of the Law Faculty expressed her pleasure to host a panel on such an important topic at the Ankara Medipol University. She highlighted the importance of developing artificial intelligence responsibly to prevent it from becoming uncontrollable. In his opening address, the Head of the Council of Europe Programme Office in Ankara pointed out that cooperation with universities is an important dimension of the Council of Europe's work in Türkiye. He informed the participants about the Council of Europe's Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law the first legally binding international treaty aimed at ensuring respect for human rights, the rule of law and democratic norms in the use of artificial intelligence systems. He added that the Convention was adopted on 17 May this year and that the current discussions in Türkiye on this are topic particularly timely and relevant.   The Secretary General of the Turkish Constitutional Court concluded the opening speeches by stating that the affective use of the artificial intelligence in the legal procedures could streamline the procedures while ensuring the consistency of the case-law and thus reducing violations of the right to a fair trial.

After the opening, the panellists including distinguished academics and practitioners focused on the existing regulations on artificial intelligence in Türkiye, the links between artificial intelligence and liability law and relevant approaches of the European Union and the United Kingdom.

The event, attended by 70 participants, provided a platform for interactive and lively discussions on the topic.

The Joint Project on “Supporting the Effective Implementation of Turkish Constitutional Court Judgments in the Field of Fundamental Rights” is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
