The 1st Steering Committee Meeting of the European Union-Council of Europe Joint Project on “Supporting the Effective Implementation of Turkish Constitutional Court Judgments in the Field of Fundamental Rights” was held online on 27 January 2022 with the keynote speeches of the Council of Europe, Head of the Ankara Programme Office Mr Cristian Urse, General Secretary of the Turkish Constitutional Court Mr Murat Şen, Program Manager from the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey, Ms Maria Stogova.
Following the keynote speeches, Ms Könül Gasimova, Head of the Turkey Unit of the Council of Europe, provided general information on the Project and on the implementation of the activities to be carried out between January and April 2022 such as the organization of a working group meeting in Ankara on the effectiveness of the Turkish Constitutional Court (TCC) judgements in fundamental rights area, a workshop meetings of TCC with high and appeal courts on matters of individual application judgments in İstanbul and organization of awareness raising lectures for law faculty students in Istanbul and Ankara.
The meeting proceeded with a tour-de-table facilitated by Project Manager Mr Çağlar Kıran, which enabled the stakeholders to get to know each other and was also an occasion for answering their questions and providing clarifications on the activities and working method of the Project. The meeting was attended by a large number of related stakeholders from various departments of the TCC, representatives from the Court of Cassation, Justice Academy of Turkey, EU Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ombudsman Institution, Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey (TİHEK), as well as from civil society organisations like Human Rights Joint Platform.
The Joint Project on “Supporting the Effective Implementation of Turkish Constitutional Court Judgments in the Field of Fundamental Rights” is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe. The Turkish Constitutional Court is the end beneficiary of the Project.
