Legal Information and Support to be Provided to Earthquake Victims in Hatay on Family Court Procedures

A training seminar on family court procedures was organised for legal aid lawyers of Hatay Bar Association on 30 May 2024 in Hatay within the scope of the EU-CoE Joint Project on ‘Improving the Effectiveness of Family Courts: Better Protection of the Rights of Family Members.’

During the activity, organised in cooperation with the Union of Turkish Bar Associations and the Hatay Bar Association, 32 lawyers affiliated to the Hatay Bar Association were trained by the judges who have become trainers under the project, on the judicial process in divorce cases, determination of alimony and compensation, custody and contact arrangements with children and granting protective and preventive injunctions in violence against women.

The aim of this activity is to mitigate the negative consequences of the destruction caused by the earthquake in Hatay and the limited access to information, and to provide legal information and support to those who cannot access legal aid due to physical distance, lack of information and economic difficulties. It is planned that the lawyers having attended the training seminar will provide on-site legal support and information to people staying in tent and container cities in June-July. In case of need, necessary referrals will be made to the bar association and other service providers. Informative brochures prepared within the scope of the project will also be distributed during the information sessions.

The “Improving the Effectiveness of Family Courts: Better Protection of the Rights of Family Members” Project is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe and Justice Academy of Türkiye. The Project aims to ensure that the rule of law and fundamental rights in Turkey are fully in line with international and European standards and to improve the effectiveness of family courts in protecting the rights of women, children, and other family members.
