FIRST NEEDS ASSESSMENT ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM LEGISLATION TOOK PLACE IN ANKARA

The first meeting of the working group for the assessment of legislative needs was organised between 6 and 8 November 2019, in Ankara, within the framework of the Joint Project on the Strengthening the Criminal Justice System and the Capacity of Justice Professionals on Prevention of the European Convention on Human Rights Violations in Turkey (CJS). The aim of the working group was to analyse the current legislation and policies in Turkey and to identify needs to overcome problems faced in various human rights issues, with particular focus on pre-trial detention, fairness of proceedings, cybercrime and financing of terrorism.

The international and national consultants met the representatives of the Constitutional Court, Court of Cassation, Ministry of Justice DG International relations and EU, Human Rights Department), Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK), Gendarmerie, Directorate General of Security and Ankara Bar Association.

Following the second mission of the working group in December 2019, an assessment report will be prepared and shared with stakeholders in early 2020, which will serve as a road map in structuring the legislation to prevent European Convention on Human Rights violations.
