On April 28, 2023, Patrick Penninckx, Head of Department on information Society, presented the “Council of Europe AI Policy Development” to a group of students from the American School in Athens visiting Strasbourg. He described the challenges brought by technological advancement and the Council Europe’s response to that, namely the preparation of a legal instrument on Artificial Intelligence to safeguard human rights, democracy and the rule of law, and conducive to progress and technological innovations. He also portrayed the transversal nature of research on AI in the Council of Europe, ranging from freedom of expression to the work of police and the judiciary.
