Networking session on “Artificial Intelligence and Environment” at the UN IGF 2023

The Secretariat of the CAI organised a networking session on “Artificial Intelligence and Environment” at the United Nations Internet Governance Forum 2023 in Kyoto on 12 October 2023. The session was moderated by Mr Patrick PENNINCKX, the Head of Information Society Department and the panel included Mr David ERAY, the Minister of the Environment of the Canton of Jura, Mr Jerry SHEEHAN, Director of OECD’s Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr Peter CLUTTON-BROCK from the UK’s Centre of AI and Climate and Professor Yoshiki YAMAGATA from the Graduate School of System Design and Management of the Keio University.

The discussion connected the public with participants representing different stakeholder groups (domestic and international standard setters, grassroots innovators and academia) united by one common purpose, making AI not only safe and sustainable, but also harnessing its potential for increased efficiencies in combatting climate change and energy transformation. The panelists discussed numerous practical examples of AI use cases as well as current standard setting work on the effect of AI on environment and then answered a few rounds of questions from the room.
