Alleged threat to birds and protected sites due to the proposed construction of windfarms

This complaint was submitted in 2021 by the Norwegian Ornithological Society (NOF)/Birdlife Norway on the construction of several offshore wind farms in Norway.

According to the complainant, the windfarms may impact Emerald Network sites as well as important areas for White-tailed Eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla), Eagle Owls (Bubo bubo), as well as migratory birds. The complaint states that the birds will be affected through collisions with wind turbines and loss of habitat, e.g., of important foraging areas and of migratory routes.

The designated site is Haram in Møre og Romsdal county, which is situated at one of Norway’s most important migration routes for birds and is surrounded by protected sites.
