The complaint was submitted in 2021 by NABU - Nature And Biodiversity Conservation Union on the conservation status of Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, southwestern Germany.
According to the complainant, Capercaillie is critically endangered and threatened with extinction due to a decline in suitable forest habitat and the actions taken have been far too few and too weak to achieve effective conservation which is demanded by law. The complaint states further that the number of male Capercaillie remaining is only 136 and approximately the same number of females is estimated, so about 270 individuals in total, but that for a viable population 500 animals are needed and that the total area inhabited by Capercaillie has further shrunk to around 30,000 hectares. However according to the Capercaillie Action Plan, an area of 50,000 ha is needed to effectively protect the species.
