Possible negative effects of hydrocarbons extraction in four Emerald sites in Donetsk-Kharkiv region

The complaint was submitted in 2019 by the association Environment-People-Law on the possible negative effects on four Emerald network sites in Ukraine which might get damaged through the extraction of hydrocarbon including measures such as hydraulic fracturing (fracking).

According to the complainant, the area covers the largest concentration of biodiversity in the Eastern part of Ukraine, including species strictly protected under the Bern Convention such as European beaver (Castor fiber), Wolf (Canis lupus), and European otter (Lutra lutra). The complainant states that the infrastructure development, as well as the pollution, will negatively impact the protected areas.
