The association SPEA – Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves submitted a complaint in 2020 on the construction of a new airport located on the left bank of the Tagus Estuary in Lisbon, an area of high natural value and an important breeding, wintering, and stopover site for waterbirds using the East Atlantic Flyway (EAF).
The airport will be placed in between the areas of intertidal flats and in the vicinity of the high-tide roosts, the foraging area of many birds. According to the complainant, the construction and operation of the airport will result in the disturbance of several thousand waterbirds and the further urban development of airport services including parking and transportation hubs will put additional pressure on the site. It was also suggested that the construction of the airport may result in a loss of up to 30% of the conservation value of this wetland for shorebirds.
