Back Uncontrolled slaughter of badgers (Meles meles) in France

The complaint was submitted in 2020 by a French citizen on the culling of badgers (Meles meles), which is protected under Annex 3 of the Bern Convention. The complaint states that no scientific census exists, which is needed to estimate the number of individuals and underground hunting is practiced, which could also affect other species living in the badger burrows such as bats (Chiroptera), forest cats (Felis Silvestris silvestris), and salamanders. Furthermore, according to the complainant, instead of hunting, alternative solutions to reduce the damage done by badgers on crops should be preferred such as olfactory repellents and artificial burrows, and the complaint further states that no index exists which registers the damage done by badgers.
