Launch of the New Good Governance Project in Slovakia

The Centre of Expertise for Good Governance starts the implementation of a new project on “Delivering Good Governance in Slovakia – II phase” (October 2020 – September 2022).

A kick-off meeting will be held on 15 December 2020, online. It will be opened by Mr Ján Lazar, State Secretary. Other participants will include representatives of the Slovak Ministry of Interior, Council of Europe, European Commission, national stakeholders and project staff.

The project is prepared at the request of the Slovak authorities, and is co-funded by the European Commission’s DG REFORM. It will provide expert support to the Slovak authorities in order to strengthen democratic governance at local and regional level, and it will build on the results and ensure follow-up to the current project on “Delivering Good Governance in Slovakia”, which is running until March 2021.

More specifically, during the next 2 years, the Centre of Expertise will work with national partners to provide policy recommendations and legal advice on the status of the Capital City of Bratislava; on the status of the City of Košice; on how to strengthen the status of cities and municipalities in general; on powers, finances and the coordinating role of the regions; and on the financial independence of local and regional governments. In addition, the capacity-building component of the project will include implementation of local finance, public ethics, and good governance benchmarks, as well as strategic municipal planning programme, based on the relevant toolkits of the Centre of Expertise.
