Enhancing mediation practices in Bosnia and Herzegovina: a CEPEJ workshop in cooperation with the HJPC

More than 30 legal professionals from courts, lawyers, mediators and representatives of Ministries of justice took part in a workshop on "Promoting mediation practices in the judicial system of Bosnia and Herzegovina in line with CEPEJ mediation tools and European standards", held in Sarajevo on June 24 and 25, 2024.

The mediation tools developed by the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) and some European practices were presented and discussed. It was also an opportunity for the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia-Herzegovina (HJPC BiH) to promote their draft Strategy for Alternative Dispute Resolution in Bosnia-Herzegovina, while stressing that adequate action is needed on the part of the executive power in order to use the full potential of mediation as an effective means of dispute resolution.

The CEPEJ's support for Bosnia-Herzegovina in its efforts to strengthen mediation as an effective dispute resolution method is part of its wider support for improving the efficiency and quality of the judicial system. This initiative also aligns with relevant European Commission reports, indicating the need to assess current obstacles to increased mediation use in BiH.

This activity was organised by CEPEJ action “Strengthening the efficiency and quality of justice in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiHSEJ)”, in the framework of the European Union/Council of Europe joint programme Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye.
