On 3 April 2025, the CEPEJ Working Group on Work-Life Balance life balance (CEPEJ-GT-WLB) held its first meeting in Paris. This ad hoc group was established at the request of the member states to address concerns related to well-being, quality of life in the judiciary and the attractiveness of the profession. The purpose of the meeting was to lay the foundations for the Group's future work, namely the development of a practical and adaptable tool to support magistrates and raise awareness among judicial authorities of this subject, which is specific to the justice sector. Discussions focused on the main challenges facing the judiciary, such as the workload, emotional strain and societal pressures, as well as the importance of meeting the specific needs of various groups, particularly women judges.
The working group also discussed the types of tools that could be developed and emphasized the need to ensure that the future tool is adaptable across different legal and cultural contexts. Collaboration with other bodies such as the Consultative Council of European Judges (CCJE) and the Institute for Studies and Research on Law and Justice (IERDJ), was considered to be essential to enrich the Group's work including through exchanges with representatives of these two bodies.
