The CEPEJ continues to support the reorganisation of the offices of the Attorney General and State Advocate in Malta

Within the framework of the separation of powers and the independence of judicial and law enforcement bodies, the Maltese authorities decided in 2019 to create a new agency, the State Advocate's Office, legally and operationally separate from the Attorney General's Office.

Following an initial evaluation mission last February, which led to the drafting of recommendations, the CEPEJ organised two workshops in Valletta from 20 to 23 May 2024 aimed at mapping the decision-making and operational processes of these two offices.

The CEPEJ experts emphasised the need to introduce digital tools and develop new systems for managing criminal cases, with a view to improving the efficiency of proceedings and facilitating communications between those involved in criminal proceedings.

These workshops are important steps in a joint CoE/EU project “Attorney General and State Advocate in Malta - Implementation of action plan on offices re-organisation”.

This project is co-funded by the European Union via the Technical Support Instrument and implemented by the Council of Europe, in cooperation with the European Commission.
