On 11 July 2024, the new Spanish version of the Council of Europe Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals (HELP) course on child-friendly justice (2023) was launched at the Judicial School of the General Council of the Judiciary of Spain, in Barcelona.
This course has been adapted to the Spanish context in the framework of the European Union – Council of Europe joint project “Barnahus Spain - Strengthening child-friendly justice through effective co-operation and coordination among different Barnahus-type services in the regions of Spain” for two different professional groups working for and with children, particularly for judges, prosecutors and lawyers, on the one hand, and for the staff of Forensic Sciences and Legal Medicine Institutes, on the other hand. The need for this type of initial training for professionals was identified in the training gap analysis.
The course provides information on the most important instruments at international and European level on child-friendly justice, and their application in practice across Europe and beyond. Initially developed in 2017, it was updated in 2023 under the EU-CoE 'HELP in the EU III' Project in close co-operation with the Council of Europe Children’s Rights Division and the EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) to include the recent case-law of the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Over the next two months, 70 participants will have the opportunity to explore what child-friendly justice is and how it is currently being implemented in respect child victims of sexual violence in Spain through the work carried out by the project in collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of Youth and Childhood.
Following the launching event, study visits to the Barnahus Units of Barcelona, Terrassa and Vilanova i la Geltrú took place.
The updated course is available in different languages on the HELP e-learning platform.
The adapted Spanish versions for the two different professional groups will soon be available.
