Council of Europe office in Chisinau has initiated the implementation of the project "Action against Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing in the Republic of Moldova", funded by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL). This intervention considers the priorities of EU accession perspectives and the shortcomings identified by the Council of Europe monitoring bodies in the field of anti-money laundering and countering terrorism financing. It aims to provide support to the Republic of Moldova to enhance the effectiveness of the measures for prevention, disruption, investigation and prosecution of corruption, money laundering (ML) and terrorism financing (TF). The project also seeks to consolidate the capacities of dedicated structures in the field of asset recovery and asset management.

A series of inception meetings with the main project beneficiary institutions and stakeholders were held in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, between July 1-2, 2024. The consultation meetings aimed to discuss the proposed intervention fields and tailor them to the institutional needs and recent developments in the AML/CFT area in the Republic of Moldova.

This project marks a significant milestone in Moldova’s ongoing efforts to align with international standards and improve its capabilities in fighting economic crimes. Through collaborative efforts and robust support from international partners, the country is poised to enhance its legal and institutional frameworks, ensuring a more effective response to money laundering and terrorism financing.
