Empowering the labour inspectors with effective communication skills

On 26-27 September 2023 the Council of Europe project "Enhancing employment rights in the Republic of Moldova" organised a two-day training on strengthening the communication skills of the state labour inspectors from the Republic of Moldova. The training aimed at enhancing the ability of the labour inspectors to communicate effectively during their interactions with both employers and employees, particularly during their inspection visits.

The training covered various aspects related to communication management, emphasizing the transmission of messages while considering verbal, para-verbal, and non-verbal language. Specific topics included an awareness of body language and facial expressions, maintaining an appropriate tone of voice, using clear and accessible verbal language, and avoiding excessive technical terminology and jargon.

Throughout the two days of training, the labour inspectors were introduced to diverse communication techniques such as active listening, paraphrasing, elements of assertive and persuasive communication, elimination of forbidden words, managing blockages in communication, addressing tense situations, and adopting a calm and professional approach during conflicts. Negotiation skills for reaching acceptable solutions, ethical communication, and understanding the influence of the institutional reputation on inspectors' performance were also explored. Practical exercises and different scenarios were integrated into the training to provide a hands-on experience.

The improved communication skills will enable labour inspectors to interact effectively with employers and employees in real-world scenarios, ultimately making labour laws and regulations more accessible and understandable for all stakeholders.

“This event is organized within the framework of the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova 2021-2024, and the project "Enhancing Employment Rights in the Republic of Moldova" which is co-funded by the Austrian Development Agency and the Council of Europe.”
