The Human Rights Caravan, a nationwide initiative aimed at increasing human rights awareness and advocacy in Moldova, made its second stop in Ungheni on Sunday, 14 July 2024.
Led by the Ombudsperson’s Office in partnership with UNHCR and the Council of Europe under the Project “Support to the Office of the Ombudsperson in the Protection of Human Rights in the Republic of Moldova - Phase I”, the campaign seeks to engage communities, raise awareness, and strengthen the promotion and protection of human rights across the country.
The Ungheni event gathered approximately 200 participants, including representatives of local public authorities, international partners, members of various local and national NGOs, adults, and children. Throughout the day, participants engaged in a range of activities designed to promote human rights education and encourage community involvement. The programme featured interactive quizzes, discussions, distribution of informational materials, and film screenings.
The attendees had the opportunity to learn more about human rights issues and explore how to contribute to the protection and promotion of these fundamental principles in their communities.
Present at the event, Mr Falk Lange, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau, delivered a keynote address, emphasizing the significance of such events and the collaborative efforts in promoting human rights in Moldova: “This event provides a valuable platform for reaffirming the Council of Europe’s dedication to upholding human rights and fostering dialogue within communities across Moldova”.
The event also marked the conclusion of the Council of Europe Week celebrating the 29th anniversary of Moldova’s accession to the Organisation. Reflecting on nearly three decades of fruitful cooperation, Mr Lange stated “As we move forward, the commitment of the Council of Europe to advancing human rights in the Republic of Moldova remains unchanged”.
Launched in Cahul on 2 July 2024, the campaign will continue its journey north to Drochia on 21 July, where it will hold its final event, wrapping up a series of impactful activities aimed at empowering Moldovan communities through human rights advocacy and education.
