As announced by the Minister of Labour and Social Protection Alexei Buzu at the High-level Conference in Vilnius on the 4th of July 2024, in August 2024, the Republic of Moldova completed the procedures for acceptance of 8 additional provisions of the revised European Social Charter, thus raising the number of accepted provisions to 71.

The newly ratified provisions (Article 4, paragraph 2; Article 7, paragraph 6; Article 10, paragraphs 1-5; Article 15, paragraph 3) of the revised Charter, indicate a commitment to ensuring fair labour practices, protecting vulnerable populations, and promoting inclusive economic growth. Key among these provisions are:

Overtime Compensation: The implementation of the right of workers to receive increased pay for overtime work will ensure pay equity as well as adequate compensation for workers’ extra efforts.

Protection of Children and Youth: The inclusion of vocational training time as part of normal working hours for young people represents a crucial step in facilitating their entry into the labour market. It will also bridge the gap between education and employment, offering a smoother transition for the youth.

Access to Vocational Training: The implementation of the right to vocational training will ensure lifelong learning and skill development, which are critical in a rapidly changing economy providing meantime equal opportunities for all.

Rights of Persons with Disabilities: The ratification of this provision strengthens the country's commitment to social inclusion and respect of the rights of persons with disabilities.

The decision by the Republic of Moldova to expand its ratification of the European Social Charter reaffirms its dedication to enhancing social welfare and promoting an inclusive society. These steps not only strengthen the legal and policy framework in the Republic of Moldova but also reflect a broader commitment to upholding human rights and social justice at the national level.
