Regional Round Table fosters gender equality and inclusion in policing

The Division for Cooperation in Police and Deprivation of Liberty of the Council of Europe hosted on 6-7 November a regional round table in Podgorica, focused on advancing gender equality within law enforcement agencies across the Western Balkans. Police professionals and policymakers from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia gathered to share experiences, discuss challenges, and explore policies related to gender-sensitive policing and leadership opportunities for women in the force.

The event agenda included sessions on gender-sensitive training, the impact of maternity leave policies on career progression and breaking barriers for women in special police units. Practical examples were provided by the participants, showcasing effective approaches to overcoming gender-based obstacles within their departments. Discussions also addressed strategies for preventing workplace harassment, fostering mentorship opportunities, and balancing professional and personal commitments of women in policing roles.

The conclusions drawn from the exchange of experiences will lead to recommendations for future initiatives aimed at addressing challenges and elevating equality standards within the profession. These efforts will be enhanced through mutual support and a unique collaborative approach.
