The Training Centre of the National Administration of Penitentiaries (NAP) ready to deliver a new course on Prison Management for the senior managers within the prison system of the Republic of Moldova

The team of the Training Centre (TC) of the National Administration of Penitentiaries (NAP) strengthened their knowledge and professional skills during a Training of Trainers (ToT) session for the delivery of a new course on Prison Management, designed for the senior prison managers from the prison system of the Republic of Moldova.

The ToT was a consolidation exercise following the development of the Prison Management Manual and the support learning materials to all 12 chapters, that constitute a training course to be delivered by the NAP TC, aimed at enhancing the skills and improving the managerial techniques of the prison senior staff to achieve better results in the field of enforcement of the preventive measure of arrest, imprisonment, and life imprisonment, using the existing resources.

During a 4-day session, the team of the NAP TC strengthened their knowledge and training delivery skills and, through a Human Rights Approach to Prison Management lenses, performed supervised simulations in delivering training sessions on safety and control in prison; concepts and skills of leadership; team building and motivation; strategic thinking, organising and planning; as well as on decision-making in crisis situations, contingency planning and risk management.

The NAP and the NAP Training Centre expressed their commitment to introduce the new Course into the practice of the Centre, and to initiate the first round of trainings on Prison Management as of autumn 2022.

Complementary to the Training Programme, the printed version of the Prison Management Manual will be distributed to the NAP TC and the managerial staff in all prisons.

The ToT session was facilitated by the Council of Europe consultants and was attended by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, the Director of the National Administration of Penitentiaries, the Director and the team of trainers of the NAP Training Centre. The activity was organised under the auspices of the Project “Strengthening the prison and probation reforms, provision of health care and the treatment of patients in closed institutions in the Republic of Moldova”, financed through the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova (2021-2024) and implemented by the Council of Europe.
