The Council of Europe through the Action on “Promoting Transparency and Action against Economic Crime” in Central Asia (CA TAEC) supported the Financial Intelligence Units (FIU) of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan to improve their capacities in conducting operational and strategic analysis in the field of anti-money laundering (AML) and combating financing of terrorism by organising a three-day workshop in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic on 16-18 April 2024.

The workshop was attended by 28 analysts of the FIUs, who improved their knowledge and skills in performing operational and strategic analysis in FIUs through discussions and exchange of experience on the multiple dimensions of the process, such as the setup of the relevant structures and procedures, the effective use of available data, the prioritisation of analysis, the use of IT tools, inter-agency cooperation and partnerships, etc. The participants were also informed about the latest trends and good practices from other jurisdictions in performing operational and strategic analysis and were provided with the training content and materials. FIU specialists also worked on specific case studies designed to allow them to understand different aspects of analyses to be conducted.

This activity was organised by the Action on “Promoting Transparency and Action against Economic Crime” in the framework of the Central Asia Rule of Law Programme 2020-2024, a joint initiative co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the latter. The Action is aimed at strengthening capacities to fight and prevent economic crime in five Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan).
