The Council of Europe organised a four-day “Egmont Group Strategic Analysis Course” in Ankara from 16 to 19 December, for the 25 representatives of the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK), Financial Intelligence Unit of Türkiye (FIU).
The main objective of the course, delivered by the certified trainers, was to further support the FIU professionals with the essential skills to produce high-quality strategic analysis reports and products.
This course was designed to support participants develop a structured approach to anti-money laundering and counter terrorism financing (AML/CFT) risk assessments, while enhancing their ability to produce detailed strategic analysis reports that can support better decision-making and proactive action. Special emphasis was given to critical thinking process as well as identification of risk indicators, descriptive products, trend analysis, and typologies which are essential for the detection and prevention of money laundering and terrorism financing.
The course included presentations, discussions, and hands-on exercises, offering participants the opportunity to engage in practical assignments related to strategic analysis. Through group work and exercises, they explored key aspects of the intelligence cycle, including collection, collation, evaluation, reporting and dissemination, along with risk indicators, typologies, and intelligence products.
The experts from Albania, Poland, and Spain, brought extensive experience in planning and conducting the strategic analysis for the FIUs and AML/CFT efforts. They presented case studies on the use of individual accounts for business purposes, categories of statistical data to gather for strategic analysis, and case studies on virtual assets service providers and money remitters in Spain. Interactive sessions and real-world case studies provided participants with valuable insights and proven techniques to further enhance their analytical and reporting skills.
