Priority actions for improvement of anti-money laundering efforts in Serbia presented

The project findings with regard to pertinent challenges in the detection and investigation of money laundering offences and asset recovery were presented in Belgrade, on 26 March 2024. The analysis took into account the comprehensive information provided by all relevant institutions and a series of follow-up interviews held in February. The aim of this exercise was to enhance Serbia's readiness to implement effective measures against money laundering and terrorist financing and to ensure criminals are deprived of illicit proceeds. The presentation gathered representatives of the prosecution, judiciary, law enforcement agencies, asset management office, financial intelligence unit and customs administration.

Areas of particular attention included the effectiveness of money laundering investigations and the proactive use of financial intelligence, as well as the asset recovery system and track record of cross-border investigations. Findings and recommendations of the analysis emphasized the importance of maintaining granular and precise statistics, that would allow to monitor the impact of the authorities’ action and demonstrate that conducted investigations are contributing to mitigate the relevant financial crime risks the country is facing. The importance of the international cooperation in money laundering cases with cross-border elements was highlighted. The national authorities received practical advice on improvement of reporting skills, on collecting and analyzing data and enhancing inter-agency cooperation and coordination, as well as the list of priority actions that need to be undertaken to close the identified gaps.

The activity has taken place within the Project “Preventing Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing in Serbia”, funded by the Swedish International Development Agency, and implemented by the Council of Europe.
