Description
Historic Environment Scotland is the lead executive non-departmental public body established to investigate, care for and promote Scotland’s historic environment.
A Scottish Executive Non-Departmental Public Body is a quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisation (i.e. an organisation that operates on behalf of government but do not form part of it, nor are they directly accountable to parliament).
Historic Environment Scotland is entrusted with the management of the ruins of the Cluniac Abbey of Saint Mary of Crossraguel (South Ayrshire).
Historic Environment Scotland manages Stanley Mills. Stanley Mills are one of the oldest factory complexes in Scotland, and one of the best preserved. The complex houses also a museum depicting life in the 19th century and the story of the mill.
Historic Environment Scotland operates the complex of the Dallas Dhu Historic Distillery, a former producer of single malt Scotch whisky. The site is an excellent example of a modest single-malt whisky distillery and retains all key components for the production.
The New Abbey Cotton is a two-storeyed mill dating from the late 18th century and brought back into working condition in order to demonstrate the milling process. In addition to the working machinery, displays in the mill include artefacts relating to milling.
The Bonawe Iron Furnace is a former industrial complex which operated in the mid-18th century for pig iron production. It is still possible to trace the entire manufacturing process from the surviving components at the site.
Stanley Mills are an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
The Dallas Dhu Historic Distillery, the New Abbey Cotton Mill and the Bonawe Historic Iron Furnace are Individual Sites of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
