- Description
- The baroque residence in Wilanów was established at the end of the 17th century for King Jan III Sobieski. The summer residence in Wilanów gave him a respite from the bustle of the capital, and at the same time was close enough to the Royal Castle in Warsaw. In 1805, on the initiative of Aleksandra and Stanisław Kostka Potocki, owners of the palace from 1799, the first art museum in Poland was opened here, in which royal apartments and souvenirs of the Sobieski family as well as a collection of European and Far Eastern art were opened. The palace in Wilanów is surrounded by gardens in which French baroque historical patterns have been preserved, complemented by garden composition designed as English-style landscape parks and English riverside parks (www.europeanhistoricgardens.eu/en/portfolio-item/museum-of-king-jan-iiis-palace-at-wilanow-2).
The Museum is an independent entity under the Ministry of Cultural and National Heritage of Poland. The King Jan III’s Palace is also member of the Network of the European Royal Residences.
