On Monday, 30 January 2023, the Icelandic Ambassador to the Council of Europe, Ms Ragnhildur Arnljótsdóttir, deposited the instrument of ratification of the First Additional Protocol to the Convention on Cybercrime, concerning the criminalisation of acts of a racist and xenophobic nature committed through computer systems (ETS No. 189).
The event took place in Strasbourg in the presence of the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Björn Berge on the margins of the International conference on xenophobia and racism committed through computer systems held on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the First Additional Protocol to the Convention on Cybercrime and in co-operation with the Icelandic Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
With Iceland, the First Additional Protocol has now reached a total number of ratifications/accessions by 34 States. This legal instrument will enter into force in Iceland on 1 May 2023.
