A delegation from Curaçao, led by the Minister of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning Charles Cooper visited the Council of Europe on 27 February 2023.

During the meeting with the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Bjørn Berge and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Tanja Gonggrijp, the Minister expressed the interest of Curaçao in strengthening its capacities and legislation on cybercrime and electronic evidence. The importance of international co-operation in addressing the growing threat of cybercrime was emphasized as well as the relevance of the tools offered by the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime and related standards.

The delegation also had productive discussions with various Council of Europe services on media and Internet governance, cybercrime, data protection and the digital dimension of freedom of expression and child protection. Patrick Penninckx, Head of Information Society Department underlined the complementarity of the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, the Data Protection Convention (Convention 108+), and the Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse (Lanzarote Convention). The deliberations focused on identifying areas where the Council of Europe could offer assistance in supporting the Kingdom of the Netherlands in strengthening Curaçao's capacities and legislation in these important areas.

The Council of Europe through its Cybercrime Programme Office and in particular Octopus project aims to support countries worldwide in addressing the emerging challenges of cybercrime and electronic evidence in line with its standards with the aim to protect the rights and freedoms of all individuals online.
