Journalists play a vital role in safeguarding a democratic and pluralistic society. Recognised by the European Court of Human Rights as “public watchdogs”, they have a right and a duty to impart information and ideas of public interest within the framework of Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Yet, journalists are under constant threat and their mission at risk. The online environment has also provided a breeding ground for several other forms of attacks. Furthermore, online violence can also translate into and fuel offline violence.
This climate of violence against journalists represents a long-standing issue which concerns most of the member States of the Council of Europe and therefore asks for a high level of political attention and urgent action.
International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists is an opportunity for the Council of Europe to highlight its Campaign for the Safety of Journalists launched on 5 October, in Riga. The Campaign will actively work towards an environment where the pursuit of truth is protected, and where those who perpetrate crimes against journalists are brought to justice, thus dismantling the culture of impunity that shrouds their safety.
