Ms Nataša Pirc Musa, President of Slovenia, deposited the instrument of ratification of the Amending Protocol to the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Automatic Processing of Personal Data (CETS No. 223), on 20 June 2023, in the presence of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
Slovenia has been a Party to Convention 108 since 1994; it became the 26th State to ratify the modernised Convention 108 (known as Convention 108+) , on the occasion of the Slovenian president’s visit to the summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Convention 108+ is the only global international and legally binding instrument of regulatory harmonisation and convergence re-instating the human being in her/his position of subject, and not a mere object of algorithmic deduction, control or surveillance. It aims at ensuring appropriate protection of all individuals in an ever-expanding digital era.
12 more ratifications are still expected for the entry into force of this unique and landmark instrument of world reference for the protection of privacy of individuals, creating the conditions necessary for a digital society based on trust and the human rights of all.
