1st on-line workshop - The right to data protection in the digital age’
The Council of Europe and the African Network of Data Protection Authorities are delighted to co-organise a series of workshops to help raise awareness and enable discussion and consideration of topical issues across represented countries. The workshops will provide a unique opportunity to not only learn and share knowledge but also to strengthen relationships between African data protection authorities.
Today’s event is the first of six workshops and covers the theme ‘the right to data protection in the digital age’. Given the growth in digital connectivity and services in Africa, this is an extremely timely and important topic. The workshop is fortunate to have three key speakers to share their insights on their topics of expertise.
The first speaker, Joe Cannataci, is UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy, and who will discuss the challenges for privacy and data protection: past, present and future. In his ‘Report of the Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy’ , the rapporteur calls for all UN member states to incorporate into their legal systems, the standards and safeguards set out in modernised Convention 108+.
The second speaker, Yves Poullet, a Professor Emeritus at UNamur, will speak on some of the challenges ahead in AI and data protection. For example, are definitions and principles of established data protection frameworks sufficient to meet the challenges ahead in the areas of facial recognition or the personalisation of services?
The final speaker is Faiza Seidu-Adam founder of the Ghana based NGO, Girlytech (@GirlyTech_gh). Faiza will talk on empowering young generations for digital leadership. Empowering young people with knowledge and skills helps them become agents of change for the future – shaping policy and technology that respects and protects the right to privacy in digital connectivity and services.
Two Council of Europe experts – Sylvia Appiah and Pat Walshe - will help facilitate the workshop and a discussion between participants in addition to providing a brief overview of the current state of play on factors affecting the right to data protection in the digital age.
