In the framework of the Project “Strengthening Data Protection in Georgia”, the Council of Europe has translated and published the Handbook on European Data Protection Law and translated and adapted the HELP Course on Data Protection and Privacy Rights (HELP online course). Both projects were officially launched on 6 December, in front of around 100 legal practitioners from private and public entities and civil society organisations.
The event was opened by Cristian Urse, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia, Londa Toloraia, State Inspector of Georgia, and Sophio Kiladze, Head of Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee of the Parliament of Georgia. The presentation was followed by discussions with representatives of Council of Europe and of the French Data Protection Authority (CNIL) about international and national legal instruments in the field of data protection and their implications for Georgia. The modernised Convention for the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data (“Convention 108+”) and its benefits for states parties were underlined. Best practice examples in terms of data protection in Georgia were also highlighted during discussions.
By translating and publishing these tools in Georgian language, the Council of Europe aims to raise awareness among Georgia’s legal practitioners so as to attain better data protection in the country.
