Braga is famously known by its historic routes and places, but also by being the home to one of the most prestigious universities of Portugal, the University of Minho. This institution, which also has facilities in Guimarães, welcomes 21 000 students in both campi, but their role during the year goes beyond studying and getting a degree. These students are known by being actively present in the social, cultural, entrepreneurial and political world of the city with many Students’ Organization, Unions and Associations being created with many different purposes.
During this itinerary you’ll get to know more about the students’ presence in the city of Braga, their cultural and recreative traditions, and some of the activities and projects executed by these socially active students. The route will take you from Braga Youth Centre, passing through the city center, and arriving at the Rectory of the University of Minho, an emblematic place for the institution and its students.
Youth social intervention in Braga – offered by Youth Red Cross – Delegation of Braga
Braga’s Red Cross has a clear and direct mission in hands: Providing humanitarian and social assistance, especially to the most vulnerable, preventing and repairing suffering and contributing to the defense of life, health and human dignity. In order to strengthen their work and make way for new and innovative projects inside their institution, they’re home to the Youth Delegation of Braga, and also coordinate the youth work on a national level.
This delegation intends to involve and motivate children and youth to have a positive impact on their local community, mainly through social work, education and active citizenship. During this itinerary you’ll get to meet this important department of the Red Cross institution, the youth members that are part of this change every day, and some of the projects currently underway. Youth Social Intervention doesn’t stop in the Red Cross’s work, and you might be surprised with out of the box organizations during this route.
Youth work in Braga – offered by Youth Department of Braga’s Municipality and FAJUB
Braga’s youth presence is felt in many ways, and in 2012 was awarded with the European Youth Capital title and went on to create an immense network of youth organizations to help each other, create partnerships, and build new projects with the support of the municipality. More than a decade later, Braga still holds active youth work, and its presence keeps on growing year after year with the arrival of Braga Youth Centre in 2019 to become a meeting point for these groups.
During this itinerary you’ll meet some of the youth organizations based in Braga and the municipality’s Youth Department that has a focal point in developing new opportunities within the city’s agenda, gather youth’s opinion on political matters, and offer support to their activities. The route will take you from Braga Youth Centre, passing through the city center, and arriving at gnration which is a building renovated during the European Youth Capital program (2012) to become a space for creative thinking, performing arts, and technology work.
