On 6 March 2025, as part of the Council of Europe’s CDEDU Subgroup on Higher Education Policy meeting, a fruitful exchange of views took place at the University of Strasbourg. The session featured an insightful presentation by Michel Deneken, President of the University of Strasbourg, who emphasised the growing threats to academic freedom across Europe and beyond. He urged the defense of academic values and called for continued investment in university teaching and research, especially in times when political and economic pressures risk suppressing these areas that are vital for democracy.

Discussions further explored key topics such as the internationalisation of higher education, the recognition of academic qualifications, and ensuring equal access to education for people with disabilities and refugees. A noteworthy presentation showcased the University of Strasbourg’s international dynamism, highlighting its faculty partnerships, adaptability to evolving contexts, and commitment to fostering an inclusive, global academic identity.
